How to Repair a Damaged Conveyor Belt?

Apr. 28, 2022

The main reason for replacing a conveyor belt is wear and tear.

Wear is generally divided into the following three forms.

Wear of the middle part of the belt

It is generally caused by the impact of falling objects. As the hopper drop point is relatively fixed, the wear of the impacted part of the conveyor belt increases, resulting in serious local wear of the belt along the running direction, peeling off of the exposed wire rope core or tearing of the belt.

Belt vulcanization joint wear

It is usually due to the abrasion resistance of the belt material itself is higher than that of the vulcanized joint or the quality of hot vulcanization, resulting in local wear of the vulcanized joint, exposing the wire core or nylon core, which seriously threatens the strength of the conveyor belt joint.

Wear of the conveyor belt on the skirt plate.

Due to improper adjustment of the skirt plate of the conveyor belt guiding device or improper design of the guiding skirt plate, the skirt plate will wear the conveyor belt during operation, resulting in serious wear on both sides of the belt. The longitudinal running direction of the whole belt exposes the steel cord core or nylon core. Once the steel cord core is buckled, it is easy to wrap around the pulley, leading to peeling of the wire belt or tearing of the tape.

Handling of belt wear.

The above-mentioned forms of wear pose a serious threat to the normal operation of the conveyor, but replacing the conveyor belt simply because of local strength reduction or local wear of the belt will greatly increase operating costs. Therefore, in practice, the following measures are taken for in-situ maintenance.

Localized hot vulcanization technology

Hot vulcanization is carried out using a vulcanizer. For the parts where the joints are partially worn, hot vulcanization technology can better restore the performance of the conveyor belt. The disadvantage is that the investment in human and material resources is large, the time is long, the area suitable for local treatment is smaller than the surface area of the vulcanizing plate, and it is difficult to deal with large areas of wear.

Localized cold vulcanization technology

After grinding the worn parts, the cold vulcanized rubber is mixed and evenly applied to the worn surface of the tape in proportion, which basically restores the performance of the conveyor belt. However, the curing time is long, about 10~24 hours at room temperature, the surface treatment is not smooth, and the cleaning effect is not good after putting into the sweeper.

Partial cold bonding technology

German Tip Top repair strips (longitudinal cracks) are generally used. The advantages are low investment in human and material resources, good wear resistance, good repair performance and short recovery time; the disadvantages are high requirements for environmental protection, inability to restore the flatness of the original conveyor belt surface and poor cleaning effect. However, for the high utilization rate of the equipment, the popularization and application of cold bonding technology has effectively relieved the pressure of the equipment brought by the limitation of vulcanization technology.
